What is a Sundog?

A Sundog (technically known as a parhelion) is an atmospheric optical phenomenon appearing in the sky about 22 degrees to the left or right of the Sun. A Sundog will form when sunlight refracts through ice crystals in the atmosphere.

The sunlight can refract through these ice crystals and create

full sun halo or a circle of light that is wide around the Sun.
